Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Washington DC on June 25-26, 2017 at the invitation of President Donald J Trump.

Prime Minister Modi held talks with President Trump on further consolidating the robust and wide-ranging partnership between India and the United States. Prime Minister Modi also met top American CEOs and interacted with the Indian community during the visit marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

President Trump hosted Prime Minister Modi at the White House. The leaders, meeting for the first time, resolved to expand and deepen the strategic partnership and advance common objectives that included combating terrorism, promoting stability across the Indo-Pacific region, increasing free and fair trade and strengthening energy linkages. Prime Minister Modi and President Trump expressed confidence that India and the United States will provide strong leadership to address global challenges and build prosperity for their citizens in the decades to come.

As responsible stewards, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi reiterated the importance of respecting freedom of navigation, overflight, and commerce in the Indo-Pacific region and called upon all nations to resolve territorial and maritime disputes peacefully.

President Trump welcomed Indian contributions to promote Afghanistan’s democracy, stability and security. Describing terrorism as global scourge, the two leaders committed to strengthening cooperation against threats from groups including Al-Qa’ida, ISIS, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, D-Company, and their affiliates.

India appreciated the United States’ designation of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen leader as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist as evidence of the commitment of the United States to end terror in all its forms.

The two leaders called on Islamabad to expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai, Pathankot and other cross-border terrorist attacks perpetrated by Pakistan-based groups.

Building on the United States’ recognition of - India as a Major Defense Partner was also emphasized by the leaders. As the leading engines of growth in the global economy, the two leaders committed to intensify the economic cooperation to make their nations stronger and prosperous.

Strengthening the Indo-US Economic Partnership

Prime Minister Modi, met and interacted with 21 top American CEOs at a roundtable meeting in Washington DC.

Welcoming the CEOs, the Prime Minister said that the world is focused on India's economy and that India’s young population and a rising middle class are among factors which generate global interest in the Indian economy, especially in areas such as manufacturing, trade and commerce, and people to people contacts. In the last three years, the Union Government in India has focused on improvement in quality of life of the people and is working on principles such as Minimum Government, Maximum Governance, he further added.

The CEOs appreciated the Prime Minister for his policy initiatives and the work done in recent times towards ease of doing business. Initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India, Skill Development, Demonetisation and the thrust towards renewable energy came in for much appreciation from a number of CEOs.

Several CEOs showed their willingness to be partners in Skill Development and education initiatives. They also mentioned social initiatives being undertaken by their companies in India, in spheres such as - women empowerment, digital technology, education and food processing. Themes such as infrastructure, defence manufacturing and energy security also came up for discussion.

Thanking the CEO’s, the Prime Minister sought their enhanced attention in areas such as - women empowerment, renewable energy, startups and innovation. He suggested linking sanitary practices, products and technologies with the requirements of school going girls. He reiterated that his primary interest is improving the quality of life in India.

During his interaction with the Indian community in Washington DC Prime Minister Modi appreciated the role played by the Indian Diaspora in contributing towards the American economy. He said that people in India are now getting opportunities and the right environment. He expressed confidence that soon, they would transform the country.

Through technology-driven governance, a modern India is being created and that when appropriate policies and governance are in place, the aspirations of the people of India can be achieved, he added further.
